Your hair is your appearance. For decades, it has been very important about how someone styles their hair. Hair is essential and has evolved with time.
This blog will be about hair! All the differences and similarities in hairstyles during each decade and what hair products were used to maintain it then vs. now.
In addition to that, I will discuss how the hairstyles and ways to keep mane healthy have improved, and how the natural hair has went from being discriminated against majorly, to it being embraced in present time.
Hair has always been that one accessory that a woman or man cannot leave the house without making sure it looks right. It has to be perfect.
Women, specifically, have been at the forefront of making creative hairstyles. With every decade came a new style, color, and texture.
Of course braids have been around for a long time, and have lasted from early days of slavery until present time.
But there are plenty more hairstyles that have made their rounds throughout the years.
In the early 1900s, short cuts were a thing. Women of the early 20th century were very into the short look and bangs. Between 1920 and 1930, short sharp bobs and platinum curls were extremely popular.
Today, there are many new hairstyles, but majority are a blast from the past! As mentioned, the 1900s consisted of short haircuts and not much has changed in 2020.
Long weaves as well as short bobs are still very stylish and many women’s go to in today’s world.
In 1930, the look was platinum curls. Fast forwarding to 1950, the most popular style was curls, just a shorter look.
With the times came a new look, and it was all apart of the culture at that time. Music, fashion, economics, all influenced the new hairstyles believe it or not.
With today, it is a much similar style and the curls are still popular. You can walk down the street and see at least two women with curls in their hair. Short haircuts, too.
According to Oprah.com “These days, any cut within the Chin-to-collarbone zone might be referred to as a bob, but in the 1920s, bob meant only one thing: short. Up until that time, women had worn their hair long, but along with the changes of the Jazz Age came new, chin-length styles.”
Another source that confirms the 1920s look is Heart. Heart tells all about the blunt bob cut and how it inspired generations to come after.
This goes to show that with the new era and new music taste came a new hairstyle as well. There was never order to what style would be in next, it just happened.
Like all new things are born, it takes only one person to try something new and start a trend. It quickly spreads and everyone takes part of it.
I love that every era had their own identity with a bit of old taste to it as well from the last generation.
I found a video that shows the different styles and looks from different years. Vanity Fair posted a video on Youtube. This video is solely on the switch ups in hairdos from the past to the present.
Another important factor are the hair products used to achieve these styles. A lot of the products used in the 1900s are no longer used or are moderated to fit the new generation.
Madam CJ Walker’s products, invented in the 1900s, are still being used. She invented a lot of hair care products such as the glossine pressing oil and the vegetable shampoo, which is still around and being used until this day.
With this blog, I want all my viewers to see the different hairstyles from different centuries and find confidence and comfort in their go to styles. It is also okay to switch it up from time to time.
My key message is to show the beauty in all textures of hair, and to help women understand how far we have come in maintaining our hair.
Black women have it extremely hard from finding what works for their hair, for being scrutinized on how they choose to wear it. Hopefully whoever reads my blog will walk away with more confidence in their mane and in themselves than they before they read it.
Hair is something everyone takes pride in. It is apart of your identity and makes you feel extremely confident. My hair is definitely my identity and I have never thought about cutting it off!
I want my viewers to submit pictures of their them wearing their favorite go to style! I will do the same.

Natural hair can be beautiful and so amazing to look at, but the harsh reality of it is that it is so hard to maintain. It is easily tangled, and it takes a lot of responsibility and patience to be natural, fully.
When someone goes natural, it means that they use no harsh chemicals on their hair, and all natural products to keep their hair growing healthily.
It also means that they do not put any heat to their head, however a lot of people pretend to be natural but still use some type of heat or chemical.
According to Curl Centric “The term natural hair is defined as relaxer free hair, which is different from chemical free hair.” Chemicals on the surface are often looked at as dangerous but that is not the case at all.
For instance, water is a chemical that is perfectly safe for your hair. Chemicals you encounter on a daily basis are harmless and free to use on your hair.
Trying to find the perfect hair products, natural that is, is a bit harder than what it seems. Some chemicals that are in natural hair products are and can be harmful to you.
This can only be because some things in natural hair products you may be allergic to, or may cause friction in your hair.
Some advisors of natural hair will tell you what products you need to have and put in your hair in order to have a healthy and successful natural journey.
Do what works for you. Not all the time will every product someone else uses be what you need for your hair.
Also, not every woman has the same hair texture, therefore being concerned about someone else’s hair journey will do you no justice.
Some of the natural hair brands I use are “Lotta Body”, “Carol’s Daughter”, and “Shea Moisture”. These hair products work for me and my texture and they provide volume and moisture.
Aside from actually having a hard maintaining the hair itself, women who are natural tend to face more scrutiny in the real world.
There are careers and jobs that discriminate against women with natural hair. They believe that it is unprofessional.
The idea of natural hair being unprofessional is insane! It grows out of your scalp that way.
Having natural hair is not for the weak not just because of the hassle it gives you on a day to day basis, but because of the problems it may bring you in the real world.
Those who choose to embrace their natural hair are more than courageous to me. It shows strength and confidence.
I am more confident than ever because of my hair. It gives me purpose and meaning. It also is my identity.
If I were to cut my hair today, I would be a totally different person. I take so much pride in my mane and only want the best for it.
Keeping up with your hair and the healthiness of it has to be the most important thing.
One thing I will say is that protective styles do not officially guarantee hair growth.
The way you take care of your hair (i.e., co-washes, shampoo, moisturizing, conditioning) is what leads to hair growth.
Protective styles can be a way to hair growth only if you continue to oil and take care of your scalp when the hair is braided. Keeping the follicles healthy is what guarantees hair growth.
Now Lastly, cost. There are products that are glorified heavily because of reviews from other people, but are costly. You do not have to spend your last dime on a product.
There is something out there that will do the same job the other does, for a cheaper price.
Natural hair products can be expensive, but you can maintain your mane in many other ways, cheaper ones
Women who are natural, send pictures of your hair and the products you use to care for it. I want to know what products keep your hair healthy and shining!
For me personally, I only need a good two or three different products to see growth in my hair. Coconut oil happens to be one! I use the coconut oil from Shea Moisture.
I have discussed further on how I feel about natural hair and the struggles of it Here
Maintaining beautiful hair is not easy. All hair types are gorgeous, but not all are easy to deal with. Natural hair can be a nuisance, so a lot of women who have 4b/4c hair choose to relax their hair. There is always a debate on natural hair vs. relaxed hair, but both have their pros and cons.
Natural hair tends be thicker and healthier. On Bellatory, it says one thing natural hair wearers do not have to worry about is the chemical frustrations with relaxed hair. A lot of women are starting to see the beauty in their natural hair state and how fast it grows when it is taken care of and full of nutrients.
Natural hair is less prone to damage. Because there is no excessive heat put on it over time. It is easier to achieve a natural or big hair’d look.
With Relaxed hair, it is easier to manage, and style. Women usually want to achieve a straight silky look every once in a while, which they can do with relaxed hair.
Another great thing about relaxed hair is that if your hair is relaxed, nothing can un-relax it. Nothing can undo what the chemicals in your hair have done. It is so much easier to handle and you can go about your day without worrying what state your hair is in, or what might affect your hairstyle, like the weather.
Natural hair has its cons. Private Label Extensions states that natural hair maintenance can be time consuming. You spend a little more time conditioning and doing treatments just to make sure it is properly taken care of and moisturized. There are also days called “wash days” where that day is specifically for washing, conditioning, blow drying and doing whatever else to your hair.
Another con of natural hair is being faced with adversity and that adversity is the weather! Weather matters so much when dealing with your natural hair. Rain and the humidity will cause a great hairstyle to go completely down the drain. One tip I will give is to watch the weather forecast daily if you are natural.
On the note of cons, I can list a couple of cons for relaxed hair. Although the look is perfect and silky, the fact of the matter is that there were harsh chemicals put into your scalp and follicles to achieve that look. According to BDO, “Chemically treated hair has been weakened , and therefore, extra care is necessary to retain length.”
Relaxed hair can irritate your scalp and damage your hair if not taken care of properly. This means oiling your hair constantly and keeping the moisture locked in. If for a second you let your hair dry up or forget to grease it, the chemicals will eat at your follicles and your will start to break off.
There are pros and cons for both Natural hair and relaxed hair. Personally, I am all for natural hair. you cannot go wrong with that! I will say that both are prone to breakage, however, being an African American woman, my hair is apart of my identity. So my hair in its natural state means a lot to me because it stems from my roots.
You do not have to worry about heat damage with natural hair. As much work as it takes to keep up natural hair, I enjoy rocking different styles. Again, my hair is my identity and so how people perceive me, my hair plays a part in that.
Relaxed hair is alright for a short period of time, but for those who value their hair the way I do, I would not take a chemical risk with my mane.
I encourage all of you reading this to let me know which side you are on. Are you team natural or team relaxed? Also, if you have been both before in the past, which do you prefer? How do you feel about the arguments presented above? Lastly, send me some pictures of you in your natural state or relaxed!!
-Silky hair -Cute styles – Easy to style – Less maintenance – Less work -Doesn’t need much work
-Time consuming -Humidity -Weather -Climate change -More work -Tedious
-Prone to damage Chemical reaction – Scalp irritation- dry hair-damage hair

I included the word cloud because it showed the most common words used from the blog and what words showed up the most in the debate between natural and relaxed hair. The chart is there for further understanding on the similarities and differences with the two.

Healthy hair is very important. There are so many ways to keep your hair beautiful and healthy. Be.beautiful.in gives so many tips in keeping your mane gorgeous!! The first step is to eat healthy. You may not believe it but your eating habits play a major part in how healthy or damaged your hair is.
The next step is to trim your ends. trimming your ends does your hair justice. The longer you keep your split ends, the more damage it does to your hair. Trim your ends every six weeks at least.
Another tip that was given in the article was to use hair masks. They give your hair extra moist and protection, especially hair that is longer than neck length. One hair mask you can use is an egg mask.
An egg mask adds a rich source of proteins and amino acids. A great way to promote hair growth and add shine. All it takes is eggs, milk, lemon juice and olive oil, which also consists of key elements for your hair and its growth.
Another mask that is used is Avocado banana hair mask. This is a great way to nourish your scalp. This takes avocado, banana, eggs and olive oil.
Other masks can be mayonnaise, cucumber, rice water, and aloe Vera. These all promote healthy hair.
One major important tip mentioned is to DRINK WATER! Staying hydrated is so important in keeping your mane luscious. It will stimulate hair growth and the lack of water levels in hair roots will make your hair brittle and prone to damage quicker!
Avoid heat! heat styling is one of the quickest ways to damage your hair. Heat fries your hair and makes it weak. Instead of blow drying your hair, let it air dry. Heat will make your hair dry and frizzy, with little to no moisture.
Last but not least, give your hair a cold water rinse. After washing your hair, give your hair a cold water rinse to ensure that your cuticles close after the wash. Cold water enhances volume and gives your hair shine. It also keeps your hair frizz free for a longer period of time.
Take these tips and apply them to your everyday life. Your hair matters and it is up to you to keep it healthy. Be kind your hair and keep it as moist as possible. Send me more tips on how you keep your mane beautiful!
