Your hair is your appearance. For decades, it has been very important about how someone styles their hair. Hair is essential and has evolved with time.
This blog will be about hair! All the differences and similarities in hairstyles during each decade and what hair products were used to maintain it then vs. now.
In addition to that, I will discuss how the hairstyles and ways to keep mane healthy have improved, and how the natural hair has went from being discriminated against majorly, to it being embraced in present time.
Hair has always been that one accessory that a woman or man cannot leave the house without making sure it looks right. It has to be perfect.
Women, specifically, have been at the forefront of making creative hairstyles. With every decade came a new style, color, and texture.
Of course braids have been around for a long time, and have lasted from early days of slavery until present time.
But there are plenty more hairstyles that have made their rounds throughout the years.
In the early 1900s, short cuts were a thing. Women of the early 20th century were very into the short look and bangs. Between 1920 and 1930, short sharp bobs and platinum curls were extremely popular.
Today, there are many new hairstyles, but majority are a blast from the past! As mentioned, the 1900s consisted of short haircuts and not much has changed in 2020.
Long weaves as well as short bobs are still very stylish and many women’s go to in today’s world.
In 1930, the look was platinum curls. Fast forwarding to 1950, the most popular style was curls, just a shorter look.
With the times came a new look, and it was all apart of the culture at that time. Music, fashion, economics, all influenced the new hairstyles believe it or not.
With today, it is a much similar style and the curls are still popular. You can walk down the street and see at least two women with curls in their hair. Short haircuts, too.
According to Oprah.com “These days, any cut within the Chin-to-collarbone zone might be referred to as a bob, but in the 1920s, bob meant only one thing: short. Up until that time, women had worn their hair long, but along with the changes of the Jazz Age came new, chin-length styles.”
Another source that confirms the 1920s look is Heart. Heart tells all about the blunt bob cut and how it inspired generations to come after.
This goes to show that with the new era and new music taste came a new hairstyle as well. There was never order to what style would be in next, it just happened.
Like all new things are born, it takes only one person to try something new and start a trend. It quickly spreads and everyone takes part of it.
I love that every era had their own identity with a bit of old taste to it as well from the last generation.
I found a video that shows the different styles and looks from different years. Vanity Fair posted a video on Youtube. This video is solely on the switch ups in hairdos from the past to the present.
Another important factor are the hair products used to achieve these styles. A lot of the products used in the 1900s are no longer used or are moderated to fit the new generation.
Madam CJ Walker’s products, invented in the 1900s, are still being used. She invented a lot of hair care products such as the glossine pressing oil and the vegetable shampoo, which is still around and being used until this day.
With this blog, I want all my viewers to see the different hairstyles from different centuries and find confidence and comfort in their go to styles. It is also okay to switch it up from time to time.
My key message is to show the beauty in all textures of hair, and to help women understand how far we have come in maintaining our hair.
Black women have it extremely hard from finding what works for their hair, for being scrutinized on how they choose to wear it. Hopefully whoever reads my blog will walk away with more confidence in their mane and in themselves than they before they read it.
Hair is something everyone takes pride in. It is apart of your identity and makes you feel extremely confident. My hair is definitely my identity and I have never thought about cutting it off!
I want my viewers to submit pictures of their them wearing their favorite go to style! I will do the same.
